Oil Painting Strategies for Working from Life
This workshop will primarily focus on painting the figure with an emphasis on the head and face. The techniques discussed can be applied to landscapes, still life and other genres. Students will learn about retinal vs construction based painting techniques and how to combine them in order to play to each of their strengths. There will be a strong focus on color and value, with an exploration of strategies for seeing and mixing color. A short discussion about color harmony will also take place. Drawing techniques such as measuring, triangulation, halving, the use of verticals and horizontals, and shape visualizations will be discussed. Squinting is a powerful tool and students will learn how to get the most out of it, including why and when to use it, both for checking values and for transcribing shapes. Most importantly, students will learn exercises that they can take with them in order to continue practicing after the workshop is over.
Ricky’s goal will be to give the students lifelong strategies that, if followed, will in time allow the students to make the painting they want to make without settling for the painting they can make. www.rickymujica.com
