Alla Prima Speed Portraits with the Zorn Palette

Alla Prima Speed Portraits with the Zorn Palette

The most efficient way to develop one’s observation and intuition simultaneously is to practice Alla Prima painting. The ability to work quickly, and with precision, is key in one’s development as a painter. The time restraint forces the artist to forego detail, focus on gesture and large masses. In this workshop, students will work with a systematic and disciplined technique. There will be frequent demos and personal attention given throughout the workshop. Since simplicity is one of the goals, students will be using a limited palette -a limited palette of only four colors; Titanium White, Yellow Ochre, Cadmium Red Light, and Ivory Black or Blue Black. This palette is very dynamic and will refine the understanding of color relationships. Students will focus on four main aspects of a portrait: Proportion, Value, Color, and Edge. The aim is to accurately capture a likeness within a limited time frame. Practicing this way sharpens observation and takes one’s skill to a new level. www.dominiquemedici.com
