Course Title: Plein Air Painting on the Rim: Grand Canyon, Arizona
Course Meets: 09-23-2013  -  09-27-2013
Time: 9:00 AM - 4:00 PM
Tuition: 725.00
Description: The canyon has seduced, confounded, and rewarded painters since the late 1800s when tourists first began to arrive. The challenges of capturing one’s impressions of this vast and complicated landscape endure, as does the passion for trying. Painting the Grand Canyon Plein Air can is particularly challenging given the quickly-changing light and weather. Working in partnership with the Grand Canyon Field Institute, Scottsdale Artists’ School is offering this workshop timed to immediately follow the 5th Annual Grand Canyon Celebration of Arts, a Plein Air event that is not to be missed. More info on the event here. http://www.grandcanyon.org/celebration.asp The workshop is designed to give the student complete focus on the canyon while learning what to select from the canyon’s expansive view. Helping students arrange pleasing compositions while creating the feel, mood and essence of the Canyon is the main goal. Success will require hard work and dedication from each student. Careful consideration has been taken to select prime painting locations suitable for this class. The daily schedule will be split into early morning and late afternoon painting sessions, with break time in-between. This will allow the students’ working hours to be during the richest and most dramatic times of day, while giving them some free time to explore the canyon. Demonstrations will also be used in the teaching process, as well as individual critiques and some lecture time. A natural and cultural history lecture, and tour of Kolb Studio, by GCFI director Mike Buchheit will help provide context for all as they record their impression of this iconic landscape. Notes: This is a rigorous, intensive painting course and is for intermediate to advanced painters. Outdoor painting experience is a prerequisite. Lodging - In-park lodging at Maswick Lodge (approx $90 per night) or Mather Campground (free) is available. Complete details provided upon registration, or email alemler@scottsdaleartschool.org.

Course Title: Sculpting the Head and Figure in Relief
Course Meets: 10-14-2013  -  10-18-2013
Time: 9:00 AM - 4:00 PM
Tuition: $725 + $50 model fee
Description: Relief sculpture is by any standard, a unique and powerful medium that opens the door for a new and deeper understanding of sculpture and composition. The ability to create a relief portrait from one photo alone is a valuable asset for any artist. Relief sculpture broadens the capabilities for a sculptor while helping to create a narrative or allegory that only exist for ‘relief’ sculpture. Whether it’s for medallic art scale or a large architectural frieze, the principals are the same. Eugene Daub has created hundreds of portrait reliefs for public figures, mints and an 18’ relief for The Senate Chamber at the capital in Montana. Daub is the president of the American Medallic Sculpture Association. Most recently, President Obama unveiled Daub's sculpture of Rosa Parks in Statuary Hall on March 27, 2013 at the U.S. Capital. www.dfsculpturestudios.com

Course Title: The Magic of Painting on the iPad
Course Meets: 10-26-2013  -  10-27-2013
Time: 9:00 AM - 4:00 PM
Tuition: $295
Description: iPad painting is not painting on canvas with paint and there is no reason to digitally fake the "look" or physical experience of oils, acrylics, or any other medium. That would be a waste! There is an astonishing opportunity to paint with light in a way that gives presence to color as nowhere else can. Nowhere but on the iPad can you create the same appearance of color. The biggest question is: why would you even try to emulate the physical look of paint? It is like driving a Ferrari as if it’s a Honda. Digital fingerpainting is an innovative, fast, brilliant and enticing way to paint and draw. It is what it is and it does not pretend to be what it is not. One of the perks of painting and drawing on the iPad is a strange sense of forgiveness and permission to be inaccurate, sloppy, childish and playful, and isn't that what we are all looking for when creating in the first place? Come on over and we will play together. www.simonkogan.com Note: An iPad (or other tablet) and the Sketchbook Pro application will be required for this class.

Course Title: Design Boot Camp
Course Meets: 10-28-2013  -  10-31-2013
Time: 9:00 AM - 4:00 PM
Tuition: $495
Description: Robert Henri said “a good painting is a remarkable feat of organization.” Get ready to hunker down and explore the first and foremost demand of picture making – good design. Composition is not simply being able to fit your subject matter on the canvas. Good composition is creating a beautiful and dynamic visual statement through the adaptation of an intentional plan – a coordination of parts to produce a harmonious whole. Intent and purpose trumps all particulars in the planning of a painting. The class will be seated at tables and will work on a series of exercises with a variety of mediums. The artist will go on an exploration of all the principles of design: proportion, dominance, subordination, movement, creating emphasis and space, all as a means to an end. We will exploit the elements of art: value, line, texture, shape and color in our search for a UNITY OF EFFECT. You will come to understand that the viewer can only infer the intent of the painter from the evidence displayed in the design of the painting. Buckle up and get ready for a ride through a fast-paced land of creative and artistic invention. Artists in any medium, and at any level, will benefit from this workshop. www.susandiehl.com

Course Title: Beautiful Paintings in Oil or Pastel
Course Meets: 11-04-2013  -  11-07-2013
Time: 9:00 AM - 4:00 PM
Tuition: $495
Description: A beautiful painting in any medium is still beautiful, as long as it is painted beautifully! This is what this class is about. Many artists work in more than one medium. Stephanie, a member of the Putney Painters, works in both oil and pastel and is often told that it is hard to tell them apart. She often paints the same subject in both mediums and has painted plein air with two easels side by side, different mediums! Her limited pastel palette is based on her oil palette and so the color combinations work in both mediums. If you are a plein air painter, this pastel palette makes painting anywhere in pastel easy. The focus of this workshop will be getting the most out of your materials with different under-paintings; various ways to start a painting and how to follow it through to completion. There will be ample time spent on composition along with learning to simplify shapes in order to build strength in your painting. Correct values, descriptive edges and atmosphere will also be covered. All of these contribute to a successful, beautiful painting. This class will teach to you to really look at what you are doing, slow down, think about it, and move to another level in awareness of "painting beautifully"! www.stephaniebirdsall.com

Course Meets: 11-04-2013  -  11-07-2013
Time: 9:00 AM - 4:00 PM
Tuition: $550
Description: Painting outdoors is challenging. Learning what to select and what to omit to make a strong design and statement is the goal. We are not obligated to paint everything as it is, the camera does a better job. Emphasis will be to simplify and organize shapes. Beginning with a simple statement, we capture the shapes, values and light source quickly and from there we will work toward a finished work. Demonstrations supplemented with visual aids will help to clarify the key elements discussed, from a simple statement to a finished painting. What is important to Budicin, is to share whatever knowledge he has with students and give each student all he can through personal attention, direction and group discussions. Class will begin with a short lecture and samples of Budicin’s approach along with some of completed field studies and then we will go directly on location and begin painting. www.johnbudicin.com

Clearly expressed principles regarding values, form modeling, color and edges will demystify these sometimes confusing topics. Robert will present manageable concepts of anatomy and show how and why they are useful. Students will paint many studies of relatively short duration designed to reinforce these fundamental ideas. This class will be an informative, non-intimidating introduction to painting the figure, and will leave you feeling more confident in your understanding of the human form and in your own painting abilities. Questions and class discussions are encouraged. www.robertlemler.com

Course Title: Portraits in Pastel and Oil
Course Meets: 12-02-2013  -  12-06-2013
Time: 9:00 AM - 4:00 PM
Tuition: $595 + $50 model fee
Description: Yes! You can work with oils, pastels or both. There is little difference between painting with oil and painting with pastel. With oils, you mix on a palette to achieve the colors and then apply to a canvas—with pastels, you apply directly on your surface, one color at a time to achieve your colors. All other aspects have basically the same information to follow. A number of elements will be covered: learn to see as an artist (learn to squint), draw with form rather than line (look for simple patterns of shadow and light), work from dark to light, tone values; color temperature (warm and cool), and lost and found edges. There will be demonstrations in pastel and in oil with a variety of models and lots of individual attention. Whichever medium you prefer, the demos will be valuable to everyone. The approach will be impressionistic and painterly-not stiff and photographic. www.lesliebdemille.com

Demontrations will illustrate a working method for students to learn a consistent painting procedure to follow. Students will spend most of the time working on their own paintings and individual instruction will be provided to address problem solving. The last three days students will work from photo references. Students should come prepared with good quality photos that can be enlarged for optimum working conditions. Aspects of composition will be addressed from strong value pattern, dominance and opposites, keying a painting, concept development and color harmony. Course Title: The Eternal Portrait Sculpture Bust Revisited
Course Meets: 01-13-2014  -  01-17-2014
Time: 9:00 AM - 4:00 PM
Tuition: $725 + $50 model fee
Description: For many of us the quest to create portrait sculpture is rarely quenched. This class will re-examine all the traditional and contemporary methods to determine a personal approach to portraiture. Many professional portrait sculptors that I know create most of their commissions from digital images or photos, but there is much to be learned from working from the live model. The more time spend working from life, the better the understanding of what you see in a photograph. Those shadows and highlights will become more useful in translating the image to a relief or sculpture in the round. I encourage students to bring images of someone they would like to make a portrait of, but I also want them to spend a little time working from the model. A typical output would be two portraits in the round and one in relief [which is optional]. Course Title: Exploring Visual Concepts in Landscape Painting
Course Meets: 02-17-2014  -  02-21-2014
Time: 9:00 AM - 4:00 PM
Tuition: $635
Description: If we, as artists, can learn to think conceptually rather than literally we will be on the path to true creativity. Painting the any subject is a difficult task, but can be made much easier it we can learn to conceptualize. There are several basic visual concepts that artists can choose from to get oriented which will allow greater ease in the design of the painting, which in turn leads to a better outcome. If we don’t think in this creative way, we will be locked into a literal interpretation of the scene or subject, resulting in slavish adherence to useless details. In this class you will learn the visual concepts, i.e., color, front and back lit, graphic, light and shadow, etc., and how to employ them in the creation of landscape paintings. We will work in the studio using our own studies and photo images for reference as a “point of departure“. The concept will be the guiding force behind the design and composition of the painting. The instructor will provide demonstrations of concepts and techniques, as well as group and individual critiques. Students can expect a high level of individual attention. www.ronrencher.com Any Painting or Drawing Medium

Course Title: Painting from Life
Course Meets: 02-17-2014  -  02-21-2014
Time: 9:00 AM - 4:00 PM
Tuition: $795 + $50 model fee
Description: This workshop is about "PAINTING FROM LIFE". I am concerned with teaching traditional realism as practiced by the Old Masters from the Renaissance to the 20th Century. My painting approach is Alla Prima, or direct wet-on-wet oil painting. First we block in the larger forms or shapes and then develop the smaller forms and details. I encourage students to very carefully observe the model and paint the unique form of the model in that particular pose and lighting. Attention is paid to proportion, drawing, design and composition, values, cool and warm colors, the illusion of texture, achieving a sense of depth, space and atmosphere and the mixing of paint. The inspiration for this type of painting includes: Rembrandt, Van Dyck, L'Hermitte, Repin, Kromskoi, Dagnon-Buuveret, Sargent, Zorn and Sorolla. I only teach how to paint not what to paint. It is only the skills and artistry of painting that I teach; ideas or the expression of ideas is in the domain of each student. I hope to help the students develop their skills to more effectively express their ideas. During the longer model breaks I will discuss ideas and composition in some of my paintings and those of other realist painters. During the course of the workshop I will give painting demonstrations and critique each students work individually every day. www.maxginsburg.com Please Note: Class size is limited to 12 students.

Course Title: Making a Painting Work
Course Meets: 03-10-2014  -  03-14-2014
Time: 9:00 AM - 4:00 PM
Tuition: $595
Description: A good painting tells as much about the artist as the painting itself. Mueller will talk about the whole process of putting a painting together; from the first concept to small idea and value composition studies, the use of a color study and on to the finished painting. Students will also do direct painting without preliminary studies. The emphasis will not be on the finished piece but on the process of making a more successful painting. Remember, most paintings are ruined at the start, not at the end, as not enough preliminary thought is given to them. Students will work on counter-change, color harmony and the balance of masses and shapes in size, value and color. Students should be prepared to work from their own photos and/or field studies. Starts, mistakes and failures could be the order of the day, but Mueller says, “We will make mistakes, work hard, and have a good time doing it!” www.nedmueller.com
