John will teach the basic principles of landscape painting: atmospheric perspective, drawing, light and shade, composition, and simplification of objects in the landscape. John learned these principles from Frank Mason at the Art Students League and in Stowe, Vermont. Frank Mason studied with Frank Vincent DuMond in Old Lyme, Connecticut, and at the Art Students League. DuMond studied in Paris in the late 19th century, learning directly from the French Impressionists.

On day one, students will meet at the school. John will do a demo and review his palette in the morning and students will paint on location that afternoon. John will continue to demo throughout the week. Each day students will be painting on location in the area and will return to the school to discuss paintings.

Portable easel and transportation required.
