Description: Watercolor with its directness, vibrant color and subtle nuances, requires technical understanding of the medium and drawing skills. Participants will learn to simplify designs, use colors and light in exciting ways, and capture mood and emotion. Betts will offer challenges in visual perception and ways to think about abstract “magical shapes”. Students will also explore innovative approaches to watercolor and underpainting using traditional and contemporary methods. Underpaintings will be developed as we proceed from improvisational concepts toward realism. Daily demonstrations and challenges provide fun and confidence in painting. Exercises are personalized to each student’s level of experience … something EXCITING! Participants may work from their own photographs. Attending artists are encouraged to bring a few finished paintings or sketchbooks for personal review. Artists of all levels will be encouraged to explore beyond ordinary and expand their personal painting styles. Students will learn the elements and techniques of watercolor painting and be challenged to explore and expand their knowledge of watercolor. Self expression is encouraged.

Description: In this workshop, students will explore personal growth in art while learning painterly techniques in creating strong watercolors from a variety of subject matter. The underlying truth that behind every great painting is the foundation of a strong abstract design will be emphasized. Color relationships, values, edges, temperature of light and shadow will be discussed, as well as the application of value sketches, atmospheric and linear perspective.
