Description: In this new offering, John will share his approach to painting the urban scene in watercolor. John will help participants in all aspects of painting a representational cityscape or town scene – choosing the subject, adding mood and creating emotional content, lighting the scene for dramatic effect, using photo reference in a meaningful way and most importantly, strengthening and enhancing representational painting through design. The workshop will include demonstrations, critiques and lots of one-on-one individual help. Whether you’ve never tried painting cityscapes or are an experienced urban painter, this workshop will be an invaluable opportunity to gain new painting insights.

Description: This drawing and composition workshop will be a lively exploration of the power of composition and the usefulness of drawing in making a painting successful. We’ll take a look at some great paintings of the masters, we’ll go over simple yet invaluable tools for accurate rendering, and talk about how sketching for 20 minutes a day transforms 97-pound-weaklings into veritable Charles Atlases of art... We’ll sketch, draw and paint, and, for those who wish, Charlie will expound and instruct about the limited palette he uses. We’ll learn and laugh a lot while staying true to the credo of have big fun; make big mess.

Description: This is a workshop for those who wish to loosen up in watercolor. Painting techniques and a philosophy of design will encourage bold, loose paintings. Eric believes most painting problems are the violation of an elementary painting principle. Lectures will be easily understood and helpful to all levels of expertise, from beginner to the professional. There will be ample time for students to try the concepts presented in a safe environment. Eric will do a completed painting demonstration daily. Subject matter may include landscapes, marine-scapes, florals, streetscapes, interiors and still life.

Description: Watercolor with its directness, vibrant color and subtle nuances, requires technical understanding of the medium and drawing skills. Participants will learn to simplify designs, use colors and light in exciting ways, and capture mood and emotion. Betts will offer challenges in visual perception and ways to think about abstract “magical shapes”. Students will also explore innovative approaches to watercolor and underpainting using traditional and contemporary methods. Underpaintings will be developed as we proceed from improvisational concepts toward realism. Daily demonstrations and challenges provide fun and confidence in painting. Exercises are personalized to each student’s level of experience … something EXCITING! Participants may work from their own photographs. Attending artists are encouraged to bring a few finished paintings or sketchbooks for personal review. Artists of all levels will be encouraged to explore beyond ordinary and expand their personal painting styles. Students will learn the elements and techniques of watercolor painting and be challenged to explore and expand their knowledge of watercolor. Self expression is encouraged.

Description: In this workshop, students will explore personal growth in art while learning painterly techniques in creating strong watercolors from a variety of subject matter. Ways to achieve dynamic effects in paint using spontaneous brushwork will be demonstrated daily through painting the landscape, still life, and architectural subject. The underlying truth that behind every great painting is the foundation of a strong abstract design will be emphasized. Color relationships, values, edges, temperature of light and shadow will be discussed, as well as the application of value sketches, atmospheric and linear perspective. Let’s discover the “how-to’s” of producing great work with sound design, while focusing on the spirit of each painting. Students will develop a personal style and gain inspiration and enthusiasm for future paintings. A fantastic time will be had by all!
