Description: The canyon has seduced, confounded, and rewarded painters since the late 1800s when tourists first began to arrive. The challenges of capturing one’s impressions of this vast and complicated landscape endure, as does the passion for trying. Painting the Grand Canyon Plein Air can is particularly challenging given the quickly-changing light and weather. Working in partnership with the Grand Canyon Field Institute, Scottsdale Artists’ School is offering this workshop timed to immediately follow the 5th Annual Grand Canyon Celebration of Arts, a Plein Air event that is not to be missed. The daily schedule will be split into early morning and late afternoon painting sessions, with break time in-between. Concentration will be on the intellectual process of interpreting landscape to “fit” your motive. We will concentrate on good composition (defining active vs. passive approaches), good drawing, interpretive brushwork, color harmony, exploring animal(s) as abstract shapes – working with backgrounds in unifying positive and negative form. Description: This workshop will be about efficiency in collecting field sketches and converting them to studio paintings. It will be imperative to pare down your outdoor gear to be able to hike through the desert to some spots that are further out but worth it. Description: This workshop will focus on painting the head in the direct wet-into-wet approach also known as “alla prima”. Participants will gain knowledge in painting the portrait in oil, applying the important fundamentals such as value, color and edges, composition and design. Description: There are many aspects to plein aire painting, but two of the most important are creating a strong, expressive design and understanding how to interpret color outside. The workshop will focus on developing a sense of design and rhythm, learning to take what the landscape gives you and improving upon it. Focus will also be on how to understand the thought process of mixing color outside, using colors that will give your painting the effect of light not just copying what you see. We will also work on understanding the painting process in the studio and the importance of setting and achieving goals in your work. The workshop will take place in Tubac, Arizona’s oldest settlement. Tubac is backed up against the Santa Rita Mountains and is surrounded by cotton woods, streams and canyons. Description: If you control your pastels, you control your color and your painting! Stephanie’s use of color is based on the Schmid color charts. Using a limited palette, we will really discover how to get the most out of our materials which will equal the most out of our color. This palette makes plein air pastel almost as easy as simply walking outside. It works equally well in the studio and is a great way to cut down on the work space often needed for pastels. Description: This class is about painting alla prima (wet into wet) and the techniques used to create a fresh, direct response to our subjects. Description: This landscape class will emphasize working from life. Most of the class time will be spent painting on location. After meeting the first day at Scottsdale Artists’ School, the class will be based out of Gold Canyon, Arizona, which will allow for closer proximity to painting locations. Description: In this class, each student will set up a still life. I will assist and give advice as needed. Expect to hear me say, “Keep it simple”. A few or even sometimes one object painted beautifully is more compelling than a bunch of items crammed together. Expect to do studies and learn to get problems out of the way so that the finish will be fun. Don’t expect to work on one painting for a long time, as each day we will start something fresh. Some days you might do more than one study. I will spend some time painting each day because it’s easier to show than tell. I’ll show you how to start loose and finish with great edge work. Some of the things that will be covered in this class: how to set up and light a still life; how and why to use a fan brush; how, why and where to use a palette knife; how to mix close values; how to start and finish a painting; how and why to squint; how to look for and paint shapes; how to paint white drapery, how to keep your darks clean and transparent, will all be addressed. There will be critiques at the end of the week along with suggestions on what to concentrate on after you leave the class. Expect to work hard and take away the knowledge to create better paintings.

Description: This workshop will use still life as a means to study light, an artist’s greatest gift. In the first three days of class students will paint from “warm” studio light on larger canvases, with emphasis on composition, drawing, and value. The purpose is to understand the difference between the two different temperatures of light and the effect it has on color relationships. Description: A good painting tells as much about the artist as the painting itself. Mueller will talk about the whole process of putting a painting together; from the first concept to small idea and value composition studies, the use of a color study and on to the finished painting. Students will also do direct painting without preliminary studies. The emphasis will not be on the finished piece but on the process of making a more successful painting. Remember, most paintings are ruined at the start, not at the end, as not enough preliminary thought is given to them. Students will work on counterchange, color harmony and the balance of masses and shapes in size, value and color. Students should be prepared to work from their own photos and/or field studies. Starts, mistakes and failures could be the order of the day, but Mueller says, “We will make mistakes, work hard, and have a good time doing it!”

Description: This workshop is designed to create a relaxed, informative, yet intense working environment. Romel will demonstrate his approach to painting the portrait and figure from life daily, using his direct fluid painting style with heavy emphasis on the use of improving color, drawing skills, value relationships, understanding edges and capturing the “feeling” of light. Students will learn to use the elements that make a painting/drawing work: creative use of color and edges, visual movement, paint or charcoal application, distribution of abstract shapes and strong design. Description: This five-day workshop is an introduction to a way of painting outdoor light; capturing the time of day, the type of day, and learning to discern and express the subtle differences in the light keys of nature. Description: If you control your pastels, you control your color and your painting! Stephanie’s use of color is based on the Schmid color charts. Using a limited palette, we will really discover how to get the most out of our materials which will equal the most out of our color. This palette makes plein air pastel almost as easy as simply walking outside. It works equally well in the studio and is a great way to cut down on the work space often needed for pastels. This workshop will focus on seeing correct values, descriptive edges, and atmosphere. We will incorporate under paintings, and explore various ways of starting a painting. We will also discuss what to look for in a good reference photo. We will work from still life and landscape subjects. Stephanie will push you beyond your comfort zone, but by stretching beyond your current boundaries, you will be rewarded with a new personal gain. This promises to be a jam packed three days!

Description: In the art world there is an insider’s jargon and assumed skills. When I first started painting with the Putney Painters I often did not know what they were talking about! What is in that little container? What do you mean “color temperature” or “relative value”? This workshop will act as a “primer” in materials, drawing, color, value and edges. Working from simple still life set-ups, I will walk you through and you will practice the basics. The goal, whether you are a beginner or just wanting a refresher, is for you to develop your skill and understanding in order to be free to follow your inspiration and really enjoy painting (and have the confidence to take those other workshops).

Description: This workshop will use still life as a means to study light, an artist’s greatest gift. In the first three days of class students will paint from “warm” studio light on larger canvases, with emphasis on composition, drawing, and value. The last two days, students will have the opportunity to paint from “cool” north daylight, indoors. The set ups will be for smaller canvases and quicker studies. The purpose is to understand the difference between the two different temperatures of light and the effect it has on color relationships. Students of all levels will find these studies valuable no matter what subject matter they may ultimately wish to pursue.

Description: An artist brushstroke, the manner in which a painter applies paint with the brush. Deliberate and full of energy. An artist’s work can be defined by this simple separation. This workshop will explore the energy of the brush, and how to achieve the effect that you desire in your paintings. We will use models as our reference.
