Description: Most open studios provide students a limited amount of time to successfully complete a head study. Professional illustrator and artist, Jerry Salinas, will provide students with a variety of training techniques to be able to create a convincing head study. This course will investigate the individual forms of the head and more importantly how to make them come together in an integrated whole. Students will learn to use an approach that helps them see the big shapes first, then go into details towards the end of the session. The core of the lessons will be based on drawing, values, edges, planes of the head and composition. Bring your chosen medium. If you are new to working from life, start with drawing. Previous study helpful, but not required.

In understanding the master painters of today and yesterday, the student will be led to understand the techniques that made them famous and how to adapt these techniques to strengthen their own paintings. Critiques will clarify the students understanding of strengths and weaknesses in a completely POSITIVE setting. The critique is to further each students understanding of progress and NEVER to impede that progress either for the student or for the class. Course Title: Subordination to the Big Picture

Course Meets: 07-10-2013 -  08-14-2013

Time: 6:30 PM - 9:30 PM

Tuition: $270 + $35 Model Fee

Description: “Big, strong, interesting shapes make for good paintings”. Think of anyone from Rembrandt to Rothko. The trouble is nature and our eyes (brain) conspire against that beauty by confronting us with all kinds of interesting details, values, contrasts, colors and little shapes. Those elements can be helpful to a painting but they must be subordinated to the larger shapes and values. This is one of the most fundamental and powerful principles one can learn. This class will explore the beauty of finding the large shapes and using those shapes as an organizing principle to create a successful painting. We will work from both still life and the live model.
