Medium: Acrylic, Oil Painting
Instructor: Julie Gilbert Pollard
Course Title: The Watercolorist Segues to Oil
Course Meets: 01-12-2013 - 02-16-2013
Time: 10:00 AM - 1:00 PM
Tuition: $270
Description: Watercolor and oil require the painter to think in opposites: “light to dark” versus “dark to light”, transparent versus opaque, and so on. The transition from “thinking in watercolor” to “thinking in oil” can be smoothed by beginning your oil painting with fluid acrylics used as watercolor. Two methods using acrylic as the under-painting will be explored. Don’t have oils? Don’t worry – it will not be necessary for you to buy oil paint! Try it out first: five essential Holbein DUO Aqua Oil colors will be provided (dollops squeezed onto your palette). You need only add a brush and a canvas or multi-media support to your acrylic or watercolor supplies. Please see the supply list for suggested oil brush and watercolor/acrylic supplies you will need. A photo will be provided, but you are always welcome to paint from your own reference material. There will be demonstrations, exercises, critique and lots of painting time.

Course Title: Acrylic Underpinnings
Course Meets: 08-20-2013 - 08-20-2013
Time: 9:00 AM - 4:00 PM
Tuition: $90
Description: You will learn to use “acrylic underpinnings” to set the stage for vibrant colors in your paintings. Using a photo that Julie will supply, watercolor and oil painters alike will begin their paintings in exactly the same way: with dark acrylic accents. Watercolorists, try a new support for your paintings! Using “acrylic underpinnings” is an excellent technique to use for watercolor on canvas. Oil painters will use their personal favorite canvas or board. The benefits of this method are numerous and enable you to get the bones of your painting established and “locked in” at the very beginning. It’s a unique approach to both oil and watercolor that will add considerably to your repertoire of painting techniques! The only prerequisite is an attitude of joy in the act of painting. Class time will be structured, yet open enough to accommodate the artistic spirit within us all!
